Tonight, I’m making one of my husband’s most favorite grilled dinners: bratwurst with sauerkraut and apples. You can also make this using Italian sausages and thinly sliced peppers and onions.

To start, turn your grill (I’m using a traeger) to high heat, and let it heat up with the lid closed for 15 minutes. 

Meanwhile, grate or spiralize 2 granny smith apples.

Place in a metal or disposable 9 by 13 pan.

Add an equal amount of sauerkraut. 

Spread it out, and add bratwurst sausages on top.

Cover tightly with foil. Scrape your grill grate and add the pan on one side.

Cook 15 minutes with the grill lid closed. Then, remove the foil. Place the sausages on the grill grates, give the apples and sauerkraut a stir, then close the lid, and cook 4 minutes. 

Flip the sausages, stir the sauerkraut and apples, close the lid, and cook 4 more minutes.

Once the sausages register 160 on an instant read thermometer, 

remove the sausages and the pan from the grill, and serve with spicy brown mustard, hopefully on homemade buns!
